Teleconference with the Chief Justice

Regent Jurist-in-Residence Leroy R. Hassell, Sr. made a special appearance during today's chapel via telecommunication from his office in Richmond.

Hassell is the Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court. He visits the campus for a week each year to challenge students and spur them on to excellence.

A graduate of Harvard Law School, Hassell said today, "Because of my ties to Regent Law and my deep affection for your Dean and your purpose, I feel like I am an alum of this University."

While unable to leave Richmond, he wanted to be present for the announcement of the winner of the Leroy Rountree Hassell, Sr. Writing Competition, an annual competition named for his Honor.

Law Review Hosts Judge Napolitano

After months of preparation, the annual Regent Law Review Symposium successfully packed the house last weekend. The event set out to answer, "Does the Government Ever Go Too Far in Regulating the Media?"

Judge Andrew P. Napolitano of the Fox News Channel was the guest speaker on Friday night. During the kick-off banquet, he defended the Constitution and our 1st Amendment freedoms. He poses here with the Law Review staff.

Legal Necessities

Regent students and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Board welcomed a panel of local mediation professionals March 23rd. Each panelist emphasized the need to be skilled in alternative legal methods in the changing legal environment.

"Mediation and negotiation weren't even career paths ten years ago," said panelist Paul Warren, attorney and mediator in Newport News, Va, "But this is the path of the future; students would be wise to pay attention."

Dean of Chinese Law School Visits Regent Law

The International Law Society welcomed guest of honor Chenguang Wang, Dean of Qing Hua University Law School in Beijing, China this week.

Dean Wang spoke on Monday and Tuesday to several groups of students, covering the questions Are Modern Trends Breaching the Great Wall? and Has Communism Conformed to Capitalism?

Israeli Lt. Col. Nir Nitzan Meets With Law Community

Israeli Defense Force Lieutenant Colonel Nir Nitzan addressed the law community on Middle East issues, relations between Jews and Arabs, Palestinian statehood, Israeli government, and the array of Israeli views on the new Presidential leadership of the U.S.

Justice isn't easy.

Former U.S. attorney John Brownlee met with Regent students this week. Part of his message included the insightful, "Justice isn't easy. It's not something that comes every day. It has to be worked at."
